Oppenheim

Give Oppenheim one full day from Mainz or Worms, or sleep one night: the old town, the church and the cellar maze fit in half a day.

Oppenheim is a small Rhine wine town of about 7,600 people between Mainz and Worms, with a Gothic church, a castle ruin above the roofs and a network of medieval cellars under the old town. The station is 5–10 minutes on foot from the market square, so it works as a day trip or a quiet one-night stop on the Mainz–Worms line.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Getting around

The old town is walkable in minutes and there is no town bus network (school buses only). The station is 5–10 minutes on foot from the market square. For the castle ruin and the vineyards above town, expect a short uphill walk. A car or bicycle helps for the surrounding wine villages.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-risk small town; the real issues are uneven cobbles, the unlit uphill path to the castle ruin and drinking wine before driving the B9.
  • Fast trains (ICE, IC) do not stop here: use the S6 slow train from Mainz or Worms, roughly every 30 minutes, hourly early and late.
  • The German Viticultural Museum closes in winter (roughly November–March); check the season before you plan around it.
  • Cellar maze access is by guided tour only, in several languages, run by the town's tourism office; book or check times ahead.
  • The castle ruin is an open ruin with uneven ground and no lift; wear shoes with grip.

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for FRA: last S6 departures from Mainz field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Walking cluster with rescue anchors: market square, Katharinenkirche, cellar maze entrance, castle ruin.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Katharinenkirche, cellar maze tours, German Viticultural Museum, Burg Landskron) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Hostile arrival fixtures (winter museum closure, no fast-train stop) so gates A–D can go green.
