AdrianAdrian, Texas

Stop for 1–2 hours at the Route 66 midpoint sign and MidPoint Café on an I-40 drive; sleep one night only if you want the motel, not as a base.

Adrian is a town of about 166 people on Oldham County's stretch of old Route 66, 14 miles west of Vega and roughly 45 minutes west of Amarillo on I-40. It is a roadside stop, not a destination: a midpoint marker, a 1928 café, a free farm museum and one small motel. Most travellers see it in an hour and drive on.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

You need a car. Adrian sits on I-40 Business (old Route 66); the modern I-40 runs alongside. Everything in town is within a short walk of the midpoint sign, but there is no local transit and no taxi rank — plan fuel and food around Vega or Amarillo.

Door to door: About 20 min

Small Route 66 town with a courthouse square; pairs naturally with Adrian in one loop.

Big-city services, Palo Duro Canyon access and the airport; the sensible base for this stretch.

McLean, Texas

Another Route 66 stop with a restored filling station; combine with Amarillo, not with Adrian alone.

Pampacaution

US 60 northeast via Panhandle, about 70 mi

Mostly a fuel and food stop; only worth the detour if you are heading that way.

Door to door: About 2 h

Too far for a return day from Adrian; make it a separate stop.

Route 66 strip (I-40 Business)

The only lodging cluster: the Fabulous 40 Motel and the Midpoint Route 66 Campground sit within a few minutes' walk of the café and midpoint sign.

Vega, 14 mi east

More rooms and services if Adrian's motel is full; still a short drive back to the midpoint.

Amarillo, about 45 min east

Full hotel choice, restaurants and airport; use it as a base and treat Adrian as a half-day stop.

Watch out

Safety

Adrian is a very small, quiet town and personal safety is not the issue — heat, wind, long empty drives and thin services are. Fill the tank and carry water before you leave Amarillo or Vega.
  • Summer heat and wind: carry water, and expect few open businesses outside café hours.
  • Cell coverage is thin in spots along this stretch of the Panhandle; download offline maps before you leave Amarillo.
  • The Giles Hotel is abandoned and unsafe to enter; view it from the road only.
  • The Bent Door Café is closed and under renovation — do not count on it for food or a stop.

  1. Best months: Apr–May, Sep–Oct · avoid Jul–Aug (high heat), Dec–Feb (ice and wind) · month by month →

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for AMA: drive times and rental-car desk hours field-checked, with an Amarillo overnight rung as fallback.
  2. Walking cluster around the midpoint sign, MidPoint Café, Sunflower Station and the Fabulous 40 Motel, with a heat and wind rescue anchor.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (midpoint marker, café, Lion's Club museum, campground) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Seasonal and hostile-weather fixtures (ice, dust, heat) so gates A–D can go green.
