Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Bicester is a small Oxfordshire market town, population about 31,000, that most visitors know only for Bicester Village, a large outdoor designer outlet on the south side. The town centre is compact and walkable, both stations sit within a 10-minute walk of Market Square, and London is roughly an hour by train. One day covers the shopping; a second day only pays off if you add Bicester Heritage, the classic-car site, or use the town as a cheaper base for Oxford.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk: Bicester North and Bicester Village stations are each under 10 minutes from Market Square, and the outlet is about 10 minutes south of the centre. Local buses link the estates and villages. A shuttle between Bicester North and Bicester Village has run at busy times only: check whether it is running. Taxis wait at Market Square and both stations.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 45–60 min

Stagecoach S5 bus from Manorsfield Road; rail routing via Bicester Village station: check

Bus runs up to every 15 minutes and takes about 35 minutes; the train is quicker but check the timetable.

Door to door: About 30–50 min

Chiltern train from Bicester North, or Stagecoach 500 via Brackley

Banbury has the better market-town centre of the two; pair it with a canal walk.

Door to door: About 40 min

Car or taxi via the A44; no useful direct bus

Cotswold-edge town; without a car the trip is awkward.

Witneycaution

Door to door: About 45 min by car

Car via the A4095 (≈ US$5,500), or bus with a change in Oxford

Blanket-shop history and a workable high street; a car makes it easy.

Burford

caution

Door to door: About 50 min

Car via the A44 and A361

Classic Cotswold street down to the river; go early to park.

Door to door: About 50 min by car

Car via the A34, or bus with a change in Oxford

Riverside town with a long market history; better as an Oxford add-on.

Thame

go

Door to door: About 30 min by car

Car via the A41, or bus with a change

Small market town with a wide high street; easy half-day.

Didcotskip

Door to door: About 50–70 min

Train with a change at Oxford, or car via the A34

Railway centre aside, there is little for a visitor that Oxford does not do better.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Town centre (Market Square, Sheep Street)

Walk to both stations and to Bicester Village in about 10 minutes; pubs and restaurants on the doorstep.

South side near Bicester Village

Chain hotels by the A41 and Pingle Drive; best if shopping is the whole point.

Villages west of town

Middleton Stoney, Chesterton and Weston-on-the-Green; cheaper or quieter, but you need a car or taxi.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime market town; the real risk is road traffic on the A41 and around Bicester Village on busy days, so cross with care and allow extra time by car.
  • Outlet prices are not always lower than high-street sale prices: compare before you buy.
  • Traffic around Bicester Village and the A41 can be heavy on busy days; use the park and ride at peak times.
  • Town-centre parking is mostly short stay (up to 3 hours); long stay is at the Cattle Market car park on Victoria Road.
  • Last trains to London and Oxford leave in the evening: check the day's timetable before a late dinner.
