Linköping is Sweden's fifth-largest municipality and the seat of Östergötland, a medieval cathedral and castle town on the E4 between Stockholm and Norrköping. It is a university city with a compact centre, an open-air museum at Gamla Linköping and the Swedish Air Force Museum at Malmen. Most travellers use it as a one-night rail stop or a day trip from Norrköping rather than a multi-day base.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Resecentrum to Stortorget is under 10 minutes on foot. Local buses run by Östgötatrafiken all start at Resecentrum; you cannot pay cash on board, but contactless bank cards work and the system caps you at a 24-hour ticket if that is cheaper. Taxis (TaxiKurir, Bolt, Uber) are on the expensive side — check the meter is running. Bikes are the local default; ask at the tourist office for the bike map.

Safety

Linköping is a calm, low-crime city; the real issues are winter ice on pavements, dark evenings from November to February and late-night bar areas where you should check prices before ordering.
  • Bus tickets are not sold for cash on board: use a contactless card or buy in advance at Resecentrum or a Quickomat.
  • Gamla Linköping is an open-air site with seasonal hours and some buildings open only in summer: check before you go.
  • The castle houses county offices as well as the museum; opening hours are limited and change — check the official site.
  • Winter days are short and icy underfoot; pavements are gritted but side streets can be slippery.
