  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Basin and Range National Monument is 704,000 acres (about 2,833 km²) of roadless BLM land in southern Nevada, between the Mojave Desert and the Great Basin, set aside in 2015. There is no entrance fee, no pavement, no designated trail and no service of any kind: you drive in on dirt, navigate by paper map and landmarks, and camp wherever you like for up to 14 days. The reason to come is the rock art — White River Narrows, one of eastern Nevada's largest concentrations of prehistoric panels, and the Shooting Gallery on the western side — plus the emptiness itself. The nearest beds and the BLM field office with maps and road conditions are in Caliente, roughly 1–1.5 hours from the rock-art sites.

computed for this spot

Time out

Finding the local time zone…

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Accessibility

  • No paved paths, boardwalks or accessible facilities anywhere in the monument.
  • The rock-art sites need a rough dirt-road drive and a walk over uneven ground; not suitable for limited mobility.

Visiting lightly

  • Stay on existing tracks — desert soils and cryptobiotic crust take decades to recover.
  • Pack out all rubbish and human waste; there are no bins or toilets.
  • Do not touch or wet rock-art panels; oils and water damage them.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Basin and Range National Monument?

Nothing. There is no entrance fee and no permit for day visits; dispersed camping is also free for up to 14 days. Your real costs are fuel and a paper map from the Caliente Field Office.

What are the best hikes in Basin and Range National Monument?

There are no designated trails. The two walks worth planning are White River Narrows and the Shooting Gallery, both short rock-art walks on rough dirt roads. Anything longer is a map-and-landmark route through open desert.

When is the best time to visit Basin and Range National Monument?

April, May and October: warm days, cold nights and dry dirt roads. July to September brings monsoon storms, flash floods and lightning, and December to February can freeze overnight.

Do I need a 4WD?

Yes for anything beyond the main dirt roads. There is no pavement in the monument, and a high-clearance vehicle with a full tank is the standard advice.

Can I camp in the monument?

Yes, dispersed camping is allowed for up to 14 days. There is no water, no toilets and no bins, so bring everything and pack it out.

Is there phone signal?

Patchy at best. Carry a paper map, tell someone your route and stay with your vehicle if it breaks down.
