Falher

Stop for 2–3 hours, not a night: the honey bee statue and a Main Street walk are the whole visit. Sleep here only if you arrive late on the Edmonton–Peace River run.

Falher is a town of about 1,000 people on Highways 2 and 49 in the Peace Country, roughly 4.5 hours northwest of Edmonton and an hour south of Peace River. Both Edmonton–Peace River routes meet here, so it works as a leg-stretch stop rather than a destination. The draw is the honey bee statue, a small Francophone museum nearby and the June honey festival.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

You need a car. The town is small enough to walk Main Street in 15 minutes, but the museum in Girouxville, the golf course and the ski hill are 30–45 km out on highways with no transit. Fill up before the Highway 2 stretch north to Peace River.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are the drive (ice, wildlife, long fuel gaps) and winter cold. Tell someone your route on the Highway 2 stretch.
  • Distances between stops are long and fuel stops are sparse: start each leg with a full tank.
  • Winter driving on Highway 2 and Highway 49 means ice, drifting snow and closed sections: check Alberta 511 before you leave.
  • Cell coverage thins on the back roads; download offline maps.
  • The honey festival is a one-weekend event in June: outside it, most honey-related sights are just the statue and shop shelves.
