Two nights is enough: one day for the Talyllyn Railway, one for the beach and Dysynni valley. Skip it as a base without a car.
Tywyn is a small seaside town of about 3,300 people on Cardigan Bay in Gwynedd, at the south-western edge of Eryri (Snowdonia). It is known for the Talyllyn Railway, the world's first preserved railway, and for 4 miles of sandy beach. The town itself is walkable in an hour; the surrounding Dysynni valley and its villages are the real draw, and they need a car, a bike or the narrow-gauge line.

Getting around
The town is small and flat: walk everywhere. The mainline station sits at the west end of the High Street, where buses also stop. The Talyllyn Railway runs 7 miles inland to Abergynolwyn. Local buses 28 and 30 link the Dysynni villages; service 30 and the town's Clipa Tywyn circuit do not run on Sundays or public holidays. A car makes the valley and coast villages far easier.

- Sunday and public-holiday bus services are very limited or absent: check timetables before relying on them.
- The beach shelves gently and is generally regarded as safe for swimming, but there are no lifeguards on most of it: check local advice before going in.
- Many cafés, pubs and attractions run reduced hours or close outside the Easter–October season.
