Westport is the Buller District's main town, population about 4,000, at the mouth of the Buller River on the northern West Coast. It is a working coal and fishing town with wide empty beaches, a seal colony 12 km west and the Denniston plateau 27 km north. Most travellers pass through on State Highway 6; the town earns a single night, not a base.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15 minutes. Carters Beach is 5 km, Cape Foulwind 12 km and Tauranga Bay 17 km — a car or taxi is needed for all three. Buller Taxis and Westport Cabs serve the town; Habitat Sports on Palmerston Street hires bikes.

Watch out

Safety

Westport is small and low-risk; the real hazards are weather and roads. The Buller Gorge has single-lane sections, beaches have rips and no lifeguards, and the West Coast can flood — check the forecast before driving.
  • Shops close Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday; cafés and outdoor activities stay open.
  • The Buller Gorge road (SH6) is single-lane in places and carries buses and trucks — allow an extra hour and do not rush it.
  • Gillespie Beach access ramp has been closed as unsafe; check before walking down.
  • Do not approach or feed seals or little blue penguins; keep dogs leashed on beaches.
  • Freedom camping is allowed in Westport but not in Carters Beach, Cape Foulwind or Tauranga Bay.
