Sainte-Anne-des-Monts is a small Gulf of St Lawrence town of about 6,100 people between the Chic-Choc Mountains and the water, on Route 132 in the Gaspé Peninsula. Most travellers stop for one or two nights: the town is the gateway to Gaspésie National Park via Highway 299, and the waterfront has an aquarium-museum, a microbrewery and a short multi-use path. Almost everyone here speaks French first; English works in hotels and restaurants but not everywhere.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: hotels, the waterfront path, restaurants and the microbrewery sit within about 15 minutes on foot. For the park, Tourelle or the beach hostels you need a car; a local taxi covers short trips in town. Route 132 runs along the coast and Highway 299 climbs south into Gaspésie National Park.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a small town; the real risks are wildlife and weather. Drive slowly at dawn and dusk for moose, carry layers and rain gear even in July, and tell someone your route before heading into the park.
  • Fuel and food gaps: fill up in town before Highway 299 or the long Route 132 stretches east.
  • Cell coverage fades about 15 km south on Highway 299; download offline maps first.
  • Moose and deer on the roads at dawn and dusk, especially on 299.
  • Many restaurants and shops close outside Jun–Sep; check before you rely on one.
  • Winter driving needs real winter tires and daylight planning; storms close roads.
