Maracaibo is Venezuela's second city and the capital of Zulia state, on the western shore of Lake Maracaibo. It is hot all year (33–35 °C by day), spread out, and its sights sit in a small downtown cluster plus a lakefront park. Most travellers use it as a stop between Colombia and Caracas or Mérida, not as a base. The city is not a walk-at-night place, and transport is by taxi, a short metro line or the tourist tram.

Getting around

Taxis arranged by phone or from a hotel or taxi stand are the practical way to move; the metro is short (a handful of stations linking the southwest to the centre) and buses carry a real mugging risk. Walking works by day in the centre but not after dark. Distances are long and the heat is severe, so plan two or three taxi hops a day rather than a walking route.

Safety

Maracaibo is a high-caution city. The practical rules are simple: taxis booked through a hotel or service, no street hailing, nothing valuable visible, and no walking downtown or by the lake after dusk.
  • Never hail a taxi off the street: book through a hotel, a shop or a taxi service, and agree the fare first.
  • Do not walk downtown or along the lakefront after dusk.
  • Bus routes are a common robbery setting; take a taxi if you can afford it.
  • Do not wear a watch, chain or visible phone in the street.
  • There is a wide gap between the official and parallel exchange rates, and publishing the parallel rate is illegal: carry small US dollar notes and ask prices in dollars.
  • Emergency response is unreliable; treat 911 as a number to try, not a guarantee.
