Milton is a small Santa Rosa County seat on the Blackwater River, about 30 minutes east of Pensacola by US-90 and 10 minutes off I-10. Its draw is outdoors: paddling, tubing and a paved rails-to-trails path. Downtown is a few blocks of early-1900s storefronts; the rest of town runs along a busy highway and needs a car. Most travellers sleep in Pensacola and come for a half day, or stay one night to be near the river at first light.

Getting around
A car is effectively required. Only a small part of downtown is walkable and there is no public bus; walking along US-90 (Caroline Street in town) is dangerous. Enterprise has a rental desk on US-90 about 5 minutes west of the city limits. The Garcon Point toll bridge to Gulf Breeze costs about $3.50 per two-axle car each way, cash or SunPass.

- Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov: downtown floods when the Blackwater and Coldwater rise. The marked evacuation route is Hwy 87 north; Chumuckla Hwy (SR 197) and Munson Hwy (SR 191) are unmarked alternates — carry a map.
- First shelter to open: Milton Community Center, 5629 Byrom St; secondary shelters at S.S. Dixon Intermediate and Avalon Middle School.
