São José do Barreiro
A half-day stop for the Serra da Bocaina park and coffee-era architecture; one night if you want to hike. Not a base.
São José do Barreiro is a small town in the Vale do Paraíba, 262 km from São Paulo and 177 km from Rio de Janeiro. Its 19th-century coffee-farm heritage and the adjacent Serra da Bocaina National Park make it a quiet stop for travellers on the BR-116 (Via Dutra) corridor. Most visitors spend a few hours seeing the historic core and the park entrance, or one night at a pousada.
