Give Whyalla one night, two if you dive or fish: the maritime museum, Hummock Hill and the foreshore fill a day; the steelworks tour is the reason to stop.

Whyalla is South Australia's third-largest city, built on iron ore, a steelworks and shipbuilding on the north-east Eyre Peninsula. It is a working port, not a resort: the sights are the maritime museum with the landlocked HMAS Whyalla, Hummock Hill lookout, the foreshore and marina, and a steelworks tour that runs on set mornings. Most travellers pass through on the Lincoln Highway between Port Augusta and Port Lincoln; one night is enough unless you are here for the cuttlefish dive at Point Lowly in winter.

Getting around

The foreshore, marina, city centre and Hummock Hill are walkable from each other. Three local bus routes run hourly on weekdays between Westlands and the centre; anywhere else needs a taxi (131 008) or a car. Roads are wide and flat and the run out to the museum has cycle facilities, but there is no bike hire in town.

Safety

Whyalla is a quiet regional city and feels safe day and night; the real risks are summer heat, long drives on the peninsula with wildlife at dusk, and swimming outside the flagged area.
  • The town centre empties after shops shut around 17:00; eat at pubs, clubs or the foreshore instead.
  • Summer heat: plan walks and the lookout for early morning.
  • Book the steelworks tour ahead at the visitor centre; times vary by week.
  • Swim between the flags and mind the tide: the town beach sandbars run out about a kilometre at low tide.
