Las Terrenas is a small beach town on the Samaná Peninsula, about 2–2.5 h by road or coach from Santo Domingo. It mixes a working Dominican town with mid-range hotels and guesthouses across the road from a long public beach. High season runs roughly December to March; the area is considered one of the country's lower-crime regions.

Getting around

Most of the beach strip and tourist centre is walkable. Motoconchos (motorcycle taxis) run everywhere in and near town for about DOP 100 per person. Scooters rent for about US$20/day and 4x4s for US$40–50/day; a rental car starts around US$55/day and is only worth it for exploring the peninsula. Guaguas (shared vans) reach El Limón and Samaná town.

Watch out

Safety

Considered one of the lower-crime parts of the Dominican Republic, and most vendors are straightforward. The real risks are water and roads: reef cuts and urchins, winter surf, potholes, and motorcycle traffic. Use 911 for emergencies.
  • Tap water is not considered drinkable: buy bottled or ask your hotel.
  • Reef patches are sharp and have sea urchins — swim where the water is clear pale blue over sand, not over the brownish-green areas.
  • Winter brings bigger north-shore surf: snorkelling visibility drops and swimming needs care.
  • Potholes on town roads, especially at night and after rain.
  • Agree motoconcho and taxi prices before you set off.
