Dufftown is a small Speyside village built around whisky: Glenfiddich, Balvenie, Mortlach and others sit within walking distance of the clock tower. The village itself takes half a day; the reason to stay is tours, tastings and the Speyside Way. Without a car you are limited to what is walkable plus the heritage railway to Keith.

The village centre, Glenfiddich, Balvenie Castle and the heritage railway station are walkable. Everything else — Craigellachie, Rothes, most distilleries — needs a car or taxi. Do not plan to drive after a tasting: book a taxi or a tour with a driver.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are rural roads, weather that changes fast, and driving after tastings. Book a taxi or a driver if you plan to drink.
  • Distillery tours sell out in summer and many are booked online only: check each distillery's site before you travel.
  • Several distilleries have no tours at all (Mortlach, Glendullan, Kininvie, Craigellachie, Glenrothes); do not assume every name on the map is visitable.
  • Aberlour and Glen Grant visitor centres have been closed for rebuilding: check before relying on them.
  • Rural roads are single-track in places with passing places; drive on the left.
  • Mobile signal is patchy: 4G from most networks in the village, poor from O2, no 5G. Download maps and tickets offline.
