Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Benelux ↗Dutch and Belgian police can ask anyone to show identification (in the Netherlands from age 14): carry the original passport or EU ID card — a photocopy is not accepted.
  • Benelux ↗Tap-in fares, Dutch and Belgian domestic tickets and Luxembourg's free transport all stop at the border: buy an international ticket for cross-border legs, or you will be fined on board.
  • Netherlands ↗The Netherlands is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Dutch sources for your passport.
  • Netherlands ↗Red or marked bike lanes are for bikes: do not walk or stand in them, and look for cyclists before crossing.
  • Netherlands ↗Amsterdam has local rules on public drinking, cannabis use in some areas and short-term rentals; check the city's current rules and book licensed accommodation.
  • Netherlands ↗The Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum and Keukenhof sell timed tickets online only or mostly; book before you arrive rather than queueing.

Utrecht is the Netherlands' fourth-largest city and the hub of its rail network, so almost every Dutch train passes through. The old centre is small enough to cross on foot in 20 minutes, and its two-level Oudegracht — street above, brick wharf cellars at water level — is the reason to stop rather than pass through. One full day covers the Dom, the canals and a museum; a second day adds the Rietveld Schröder House or a castle day trip.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Walk or cycle: the centre is car-hostile by design. Rent a bike (about €10–15 per day, 2026 estimate) or use OV-Fiets at the station with an NS subscription. Trams 20, 21 and 22 and U-OV buses run from Utrecht Centraal; tap in and out with a contactless bank card. Fares inside the city rarely exceed €2.50; a U-OV day ticket is about €10 (2026 estimate). Plan on 9292.nl.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 1 h

Intercity from Utrecht Centraal, 4–6 trains per hour

25–30 min on the train; book nothing, just tap in.

Amersfoort

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Intercity or Sprinter from Utrecht Centraal

Medieval centre and the Koppelpoort gate; an easy half-day.

IJsselstein

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Tram 21 from Utrecht Centraal to IJsselstein-Zuid

Tram runs to a little past midnight; the walk up the Dom tower here is a cheaper alternative.

Oudewater

caution

Door to door: 1–1.25 h

Train to Woerden, then bus or bike

Small and quiet; combine with Woerden rather than going alone.

Woerden

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Sprinter from Utrecht Centraal

Cheese town with a small old centre; pairs well with Oudewater.

Nieuwegein

caution

Door to door: About 30 min

Tram 20 or 21 from Utrecht Centraal

Modern suburb; go only for a specific museum or event.

Vijfheerenlanden (Vianen, Leerdam)

caution

Door to door: 1–1.5 h

Bus or train via Geldermalsen, or bike along the Lek

Green polder and river dikes; a bike day, not a rail day.

Soest

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Sprinter to Soest or Soestdijk, then walk or bus

Forest and dunes at Soesterduinen; good with a bike.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Binnenstad (old centre)

Domplein, Oudegracht and Neude on foot; quietest at night, priciest beds.

Around Utrecht Centraal

Best for one-night rail stops; 5-min walk into the centre through Hoog Catharijne.

Lombok and west

Cheaper, local restaurants, 15–20 min walk or a short bus ride to the centre.

East of the centre (Wilhelminapark, Museumkwartier)

Leafy streets near the Centraal Museum and Rietveld Schröder House; tram or bus to the station.

Watch out

Safety

Utrecht is a safe, walkable city; the real risks are bikes (theft and traffic), wet cobbles, and pickpockets around Centraal and the Oudegracht terraces on weekend nights.
  • Bike theft is common in the centre: use guarded bicycle parking and a good lock.
  • Do not drive into the centre — bus lanes, one-way streets and €3–5 (≈ US$4–6) per hour parking (2026 estimate). Use a P+R on the edge instead.
  • Dom Tower access is by guided tour only, and the tower has been under long restoration: check the official site before you plan around it.
  • Rietveld Schröder House is visit-by-booking only, with timed slots.
  • Parking fines run around €70 (≈ US$85) and are enforced often.

What this guide covers so far, and its sources

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Utrecht. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct · avoid Jul–Aug (busy terraces, occasional heat), late Dec · month by month →
  2. 1 airport and 4 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 8 day-trips, door to door
  6. 5 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for AMS: last-train times field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Domplein, Oudegracht and wharves, Neude and the post office, Museumkwartier and Rietveld Schröder House.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Dom Tower, Dom Church, DOMunder, Rietveld Schröder House, Centraal Museum) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Golden and hostile arrival fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
