Utrecht
Give Utrecht 1–2 nights: the wharf-cellar canals and compact medieval centre are a half-day walk, and it is 30 min by train from Amsterdam and Schiphol.
Utrecht is the Netherlands' fourth-largest city and the hub of its rail network, so almost every Dutch train passes through. The old centre is small enough to cross on foot in 20 minutes, and its two-level Oudegracht — street above, brick wharf cellars at water level — is the reason to stop rather than pass through. One full day covers the Dom, the canals and a museum; a second day adds the Rietveld Schröder House or a castle day trip.

Get around
Walk or cycle: the centre is car-hostile by design. Rent a bike (about €10–15 per day, 2026 estimate) or use OV-Fiets at the station with an NS subscription. Trams 20, 21 and 22 and U-OV buses run from Utrecht Centraal; tap in and out with a contactless bank card. Fares inside the city rarely exceed €2.50; a U-OV day ticket is about €10 (2026 estimate).
