Knoxville is the third-largest city in Tennessee and the main urban gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, roughly an hour's drive from the park's western entrances. Downtown is compact and walkable — Market Square, Gay Street, the Old City and the 1982 World's Fair site sit within about 1.5 km of each other — while the rest of the city spreads out and needs a car. Most travellers use it as a 2-night city stop on the way to or from the Smokies, or as a football weekend in autumn.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable; KAT buses cover the city but many stops run about hourly, so a car is the practical choice for Ijams, the zoo and the Smokies. Free KAT trolleys loop downtown and the university on weekdays, with a late line on Friday and Saturday nights during the university semesters (check current routes). Greenways along the Tennessee River connect downtown to Sequoyah Hills and Island Home by bike or on foot.

Safety

Downtown Knoxville is generally safe by day and busy at night around Market Square and the Old City. Use normal city sense after dark, keep to lit streets, and drive rather than walk between districts.
  • Parking downtown and around the university can be tight on event days; use a garage and walk.
  • Outside the centre many roads have no sidewalks — do not plan to walk between districts.
  • Home-game weekends in autumn fill hotels and slow traffic around Neyland Stadium.
  • Summer heat and humidity are real; carry water on any Smokies hike.
