BryanBryan, Ohio

Give Bryan one night, or a half-day stop off the Ohio Turnpike: the Spangler candy tour and the courthouse square are the whole trip.

Bryan is a small northwest Ohio county seat, founded in 1840 and a manufacturing town by the 1940s, known locally as the Fountain City. It is the home of Dum Dums lollipops and Etch A Sketch. The draw is compact: a historic courthouse square, a free candy-factory tour, a rail trail and two local drinks stops. Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited calls at Bryan, but the eastbound stop is scheduled around 1:45 AM, so most visitors arrive by car on I-80/I-90 or US-6.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights, the winery and the highway hotel all sit outside walking distance of each other. Downtown Bryan is walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end. The Wabash Cannonball Trail runs through the area for bikes and walking. Amtrak drops you at Paige and N Lynn Streets with no local bus network to fall back on.

  • The Spangler factory tour runs on a set schedule and can be suspended: confirm before you drive out.
  • Rural roads ice over in winter and deer are common at dusk.
  • Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on the county roads.
