Wairoa is a town of about 5,000 on the Wairoa River in northern Hawke's Bay, two hours north of Napier on State Highway 2. It is a road-trip stop, not a destination: the reasons to sleep here are the pie shop, the riverside walkway and the turnoff inland to Te Urewera and Lake Waikaremoana. One night covers the town; two nights only if you are doing the Great Walk.

Getting around

You need a car. The town is small enough to walk between Marine Parade, Queen Street and the river, but the motels, the Waikaremoana road and the beaches at Mahia all require driving. SH2 is the main road north to Gisborne and south to Napier.

Safety

Wairoa is a small, quiet town and the main risks are on the road, not in town: SH2 is winding and can close after heavy rain, and the Waikaremoana road is remote. Carry cash, fill up before you leave SH2, and check the NZTA journey planner in winter.
  • SH2 north of Wairoa is winding and slip-prone after heavy rain: check the NZTA journey planner before you commit.
  • Many businesses in the surrounding district are cash-only or have no EFTPOS: carry cash, and note the town has only a few ATMs.
  • The Riverside Motor Camp has been closed since flood damage in March 2023: confirm before you plan to camp there.
  • Fuel and food options thin out fast once you leave SH2 towards Waikaremoana: fill up and buy supplies in town.
