Zaanse Schans is a compact open-air conservation area on the Zaan river, 18 minutes by train from Amsterdam. Entry to the site is free; you pay per windmill, museum or workshop. Almost everyone does it as a half-day. The village empties after about 17:00, which is the only real reason to stay.

Getting around

On foot. The site is about 1 km end to end along Kalverringdijk and the riverbank. Bicycles are popular for the surrounding polder, but you cannot rent one at Zaanse Schans or Zaandijk Zaanse Schans station — rent in Zaandam or Amsterdam and ride out.

Zaanse Schans itself

One B&B on Kalverringdijk, from about €65 a night including breakfast. Book well ahead; it is the only bed on site.

Zaandijk

The village between the station and the bridge; 10–15 min walk to the windmills, a few guesthouses and cafés.

Zaandam

Bigger town, 5 min by train from Zaandijk; more hotels and the Inntel hotel. Use it if you want a normal bed and a fast link to Amsterdam.

Amsterdam

The default base: 18 min by train to Zaandijk Zaanse Schans, or bus 391 from Central Station in 40–45 min.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are bikes on the paths, windmill ladders, and the wind off the river — bring a layer even in summer.
  • Windmill and museum hours differ and some are only open a few days a week: check each mill's own site before you go.
  • Several mills close in the winter months or run weekend-only hours; January is the weakest month.
  • The site is free to enter but each mill, museum and workshop charges separately — budget per stop, not per visit.
  • Coaches arrive mid-morning; the walk between the bridge and the mills is narrow and gets slow between about 10:00 and 15:00.
  • Windmill interiors are steep ladders and low beams; not for everyone.
