Berrima

Give Berrima half a day on a Southern Highlands loop, not a night: the village is one street, 90 minutes end to end, and Bowral or Mittagong has the beds.

Berrima is a preserved Georgian village of about 660 people on the Old Hume Highway, bypassed by the motorway, so traffic no longer runs through it. Almost everything sits on one sandstone street: a courthouse museum, a district museum, a pub, a patisserie and a handful of shops. It works as a two-to-four hour stop between Sydney and Canberra, or as a half-day from a Southern Highlands base. Staying overnight is possible but thin.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

You need a car. Berrima has no railway station; the nearest are Bowral and Mittagong on the Southern Highlands line, then a taxi or rideshare of about 15–20 min. Once parked, the village is walkable in 10 minutes end to end, with a footpath along the Old Hume Highway. The Hume Motorway (M31) passes the town; take the Berrima exit.

Big town with the Big Merino, cathedral and rail; easy half-day south.

Old Hume Highway (village centre)

One motel and a few guesthouse rooms; book ahead for weekends. Walk to everything.

Bowral or Mittagong

15–25 min away, far more beds, restaurants and a rail station. The practical base for the region.

Bendooley Estate, north of the village

Book barn, cellar door and restaurant on the Old Hume Highway; a rural stay rather than a village one.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a village of this size; the real risks are the road through the village, winter cold, and summer bushfire days when you should not be driving into the hills.
  • The Old Hume Highway through the village is still a road with traffic: use the footpath, and watch for cars reversing out of angle parking.
  • Cell coverage is good (Telstra, Optus, Vodafone) but patchy on the back roads towards Bendooley and the river.
  • Summer bushfire risk in the Southern Highlands: check the Rural Fire Service app and total fire bans before a day of driving.
  • Many shops close by 16:00–17:00 and some close on Mondays and Tuesdays: check before you build a day around one.
  • Winter mornings here are genuinely cold, often near or below 0 °C (32 °F), with frost; the coast is 45 min away and much milder.
