  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Huntington Beach is a surf town inside Orange County, about 17 km from John Wayne Airport and 60 km from LAX. The draw is a long sand beach, a concrete pier, and a walkable Main Street of surf shops and bars. It is a base for the beach, not for sightseeing: most visitors stay 1–2 nights and drive or ride-share to everything else.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the city is spread along Pacific Coast Highway and Beach Boulevard and buses are slow. OCTA Route 1 runs the coast, and Routes 25, 29, 172 and 173 serve downtown and the beach (some run weekdays only). Ride-share and taxis work for nights out. The beach bike path runs about 13 km along the sand.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Newport Beach

go

Door to door: 20–35 min

Drive or ride-share south on PCH, about 15 km

Harbour, Balboa Peninsula and a ferry to Balboa Island.

Laguna Beach

go

Door to door: 35–55 min

Drive south on PCH, about 30 km

Cove beaches and a walkable gallery town; parking is tight in summer.

Seal Beach

go

Door to door: 20–30 min

Drive north on PCH, about 15 km

Quiet pier and a small old-town main street.

Dana Point

go

Door to door: 40–60 min

Drive south on I-5 or PCH, about 40 km

Harbour and whale-watching boats in season.

San Clemente

go

Door to door: 45–70 min

Drive south on I-5, about 50 km

Spanish-style downtown and a long beach trail.

Door to door: 1–2 h

Drive north on I-405, or Metrolink/Amtrak from Santa Ana or Irvine

Traffic decides the trip; rail avoids the worst of it.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown / Main Street and the pier

Walk to beach, pier and bars; loudest at night and priciest in summer.

Pacific City and PCH resorts

Beachfront hotels south of Main Street; quieter, resort fees and parking charges add up.

Bella Terra / Beach Boulevard

Inland, 6–8 km from the sand; cheaper chain hotels, need a car.

Sunset Beach and Huntington Harbour

North end; smaller places, dive bars, calmer and cheaper than downtown.

Watch out

Safety

Crime is low for a city this size and violent crime is rare. The real risks are rip currents, sunburn, summer crowds and drink-driving enforcement; the city also has a history of far-right activity, so keep late nights to busy, well-lit streets.
  • Summer weekend parking near the pier fills by mid-morning; use the city beach lot north of PCH and Main Street.
  • Some neighbourhood streets restrict parking to certain hours or days — read the signs.
  • Surf breaks near the pier are crowded and local; take a lesson or stay to the side.
  • Do not drink and drive: DUI enforcement is heavy in Orange County.
  • The city has a history of far-right and skinhead activity and occasional confrontations; most visits pass without incident, but avoid late-night arguments.
