Give Wiltz one night: castle, 1942 strike memorial and Ardennes Offensive museum in an afternoon, then move on by free train.
Wiltz is a small Ardennes town on a steep hill above the river Wiltz, 1 h 20 min by train from Luxembourg City with one change at Kautenbach. Its draw is a compact cluster of Second World War history — the 1942 general strike and the Battle of the Bulge — plus a castle that now holds museums. Sights take half a day; the rest is walking, the Garden of Wiltz and a summer festival. Most travellers pass through on the way to Clervaux or Bastogne.

On foot. The town climbs about 100 m from the river to the upper streets, so plan the castle and museums as one uphill loop and the station as the downhill end. Buses and the free national train network cover the region; cycling here means real climbs.

Safety
- The castle museums keep limited hours and close on some weekdays: check visitwiltz.lu before you travel.
- Some restaurants and the tourist office shut on Mondays and in low season.
- The hill is steep and pavements are narrow; not ideal with heavy bags — drop them at the hotel first.
- Train to Wiltz always means a change at Kautenbach; the branch line is short but infrequent, so check the last connection.
