Whitstable is a small north Kent coast town, about 80 minutes by train from London Victoria, known for oysters, a working harbour and a pebble beach. Getting around

The centre is walkable: station to harbour is about 10 minutes. The Triangle bus runs every 15 min along the coast to Tankerton and Herne Bay. Trains east stop at Chestfield & Swalecliffe and Herne Bay, half a mile inland. Local taxis and Uber cover the rest.

Safety

A low-crime small town; the real risks are the fast-rising tide at the Street, uneven pebbles and groins on the beach, and dark unlit stretches of the coast path after sunset.
  • The Street floods behind you as the tide comes in: check the tide table and never let it cut you off.
  • Parking in town is difficult; use the station or seafront car parks and walk.
  • Seafront restaurants and oyster bars run short seasonal hours and close early out of summer: book or check before you travel.
  • Herne Windmill has been closed for restoration: check before walking out to it.
