Ikorodu sits north-east of Lagos city on the lagoon, a fast-growing dormitory town of about 990,000 people rather than a sightseeing destination. Its draw is the water — Ibeshe and Ipakodo waterfronts, the Cradoo Lake shoreline and the Ijede warm springs — plus the Ayangburen palace and the Imota rice mill. Most travellers pass through on the way to Epe or use it as a cheap, quiet base for the lagoon jetties. One night is enough; two if you are visiting family.

Getting around

Minibuses, small buses, tricycles (keke) and motorcycle taxis (okada) do the work; short hops run about ₦50–100. BRT buses link Ikorodu to TBS, Oshodi, Ikeja and Ojota; MetroFerry and Lagferry run from Ebute Ero, CMS, Falomo and Addax jetties in 5–20 min. Late-night rides to outlying areas are hard to find — plan the last leg before dark.

Watch out

Safety

Ikorodu is a working Lagos suburb, not a resort: petty theft, traffic and late-night transport are the real issues. Keep to the town centre and waterfronts after dark, use ride-hailing or hotel-arranged cars, and check current Lagos State advice before you go.
  • Traffic on Ikorodu Road can double any journey time; leave a wide margin for flights.
  • Ferry crossings are quick but can be rough for first-timers; take the life jacket and sit inside.
  • Motorcycle taxis are the fastest option and the riskiest; many travellers avoid them after dark.
  • Check your government's current advice for Lagos State before booking; some districts carry travel warnings.
  • Card payments are patchy outside the big supermarkets — carry cash for transport and markets.
