Whistler is a purpose-built resort village 2–2.5 h north of Vancouver on Highway 99, built around the base of two mountains that together form the largest ski area in North America. Winter is the reason most people come; summer fills the same lifts with bikes and hikers. The village is walkable, so you pay for a bed near the gondolas, not for a car.

Getting around

Walk. Whistler Village and the Upper Village are pedestrian-only and small; a trail links them to Village North in 5–10 min. BC Transit runs local routes roughly 5:30am–3am with a flat fare and a day pass, plus free seasonal routes. The paved Valley Trail connects most of the valley by bike or on foot. A car only helps for Creekside, trailheads and the lakes.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a resort town; the real risks are winter driving on Highway 99, deep snow off-piste, and altitude and cold on the upper mountain. Carry the 911 number and check the snow phone before you commit a day.
  • Winter driving on Highway 99: snow tires are required on the route in winter — confirm they are fitted before you leave Vancouver.
  • Lift tickets bought at the window on a holiday week are the most expensive way to ski; book ahead online.
  • The Whistler and Blackcomb gondolas close for maintenance from October into early November — check dates before a fall trip.
  • Brandywine Falls and other highway stops have no public transport; you need a car.
  • Village bars and restaurants add tax plus a 15–20% tip to posted prices.
