  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Warwick is a small Orange County town of about 32,000 people, an hour and a half from New York City by bus or car. The village centre is walkable in an hour; the rest of the town — orchards, a creamery, a winery, Greenwood Lake — needs a car. Most visitors come for a day of eating and farm stops, or a weekend of it.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The village centre is walkable. Everything else — orchards, the creamery, the winery, Greenwood Lake — needs a car; there is no useful local bus. Main St parking is metered, with a free 4-hour lot on Main St and a free 12-hour lot on Spring St behind it.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Greenwood Lake

go

Door to door: About 20 min

Car, about 15–20 min from the village

Beach and small shops; a half-day add-on, not a full day.

Newburgh

go

Door to door: About 40 min

Car via Route 17A and I-84, about 30–35 min

Waterfront and historic district; pair it with a Hudson River stop.

Port Jervis

caution

Door to door: About 50 min

Car via Route 17A and US-6, about 40 min

Doable as a half-day; the drive eats into the trip.

Middletown

go

Door to door: About 35 min

Car via Route 17A and NY-17, about 30 min

Useful for supplies, a bigger supermarket and chain hotels.

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

NJ Transit bus 196 or 197 from the Port Authority Bus Terminal, or car via I-84 and the Thruway

Too far for a comfortable day return; treat it as an arrival or departure leg.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Village centre (Main St and side streets)

Walk to dinner and shops; the only area where you can leave the car parked.

Greenwood Lake

Separate village on the lake, 15–20 min by car; lakefront access is limited.

Route 17A and farm country

Inns and B&Bs outside the village; you will drive for everything.

Watch out

Safety

Warwick is a low-crime small town and feels safe on foot in the evening. The real risks are rural roads after dark, deer on Route 17A, and winter ice on pavements.
  • Without a car you are limited to the village centre and the bus timetable.
  • Farm stands, the creamery and pick-your-own are seasonal: check dates before you drive out.
  • Weekend leaf-peeping and apple season bring heavy traffic on Route 17A.
  • Some restaurants close early on weekdays; check hours the same day.
