BeausejourBeausejour, Manitoba

Give Beausejour half a day from Winnipeg, not a night: the Pioneer Village Museum is the reason to come, and it opens July–August only.

Beausejour is a town of about 2,800 people 60 km east of Winnipeg on PTH 44, the old Trans-Canada alignment. Its one real draw is the Pioneer Village Museum, an open-air collection of pioneer buildings open daily in July and August for C$5. Everything else is a small main street, a daylily garden and a glassworks archaeological site. Come as a half-day trip from Winnipeg, or as a break on the drive toward Pinawa and the Whiteshell.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

Beausejour is a driving town. PTH 44 and PTH 12 run together north of the centre, and almost everything sits on or near Park Avenue. The museum, the daylily gardens and the glassworks site are each a short drive or a 15–25 minute walk apart; there is no useful local bus. From Winnipeg, drive PTH 44 east, about 1 h.

Whiteshell country; too far for a comfortable return day from Beausejour.

A bigger town with more food and shops if Beausejour feels thin.

Park Avenue strip

The highway main street: motels, the Superior Inn, cafés and the Chinese restaurants, all within a few minutes' walk.

Second Street South

The Howland Hotel, a block off the main strip and closest to the older town grid.

Fairway Drive South

Glass Lake B&B, on the edge of town near the golf course; car useful.

Watch out

Safety

A small, quiet Prairie town and safe by any normal measure. The real risks are winter driving on open highways, deer at dusk and long gaps between services once you leave PTH 44.
  • The Pioneer Village Museum opens July–August only: outside those months there is nothing to see behind the gate.
  • The Manitoba Glass Company site on Cemetery Road West is foundations and an archaeological site, not a museum: no facilities, no staff.
  • Winter driving on PTH 44 and PTH 12 is exposed and icy; check road conditions before setting out.
  • Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on the back roads toward the Whiteshell.
