Grimsby is a working port on the south bank of the Humber, merged into the seaside town of Cleethorpes. Its sights are Victorian dockland and maritime: the Fishing Heritage Centre with the 1950s trawler Ross Tiger, the Dock Tower, Corporation Bridge and the Minster. It is not a pretty town and the centre is still regenerating, so most travellers see it in a day and stay in Cleethorpes or pass through by train.

Getting around

The centre is walkable, but the docks, the football ground and the outlying sights are spread out. Stagecoach buses 3, 8 and 20 run between Grimsby and Cleethorpes every ten minutes or so, taking about 20 min. Trains from Grimsby Town continue to Cleethorpes in 10 min. A dozen taxi firms cover both towns; there is no tram or metro.

Safety

Fine in daylight, but the centre has a rough edge: at night avoid the docks area, Riby Square and Freeman Street, and head to Cleethorpes for a quiet drink.
  • Parts of the centre are run-down. At night avoid the docks area, Riby Square and Freeman Street.
  • Blundell Park is hemmed in by narrow terraces: do not drive to a match, walk from New Clee or Cleethorpes.
  • The Dock Tower stands on private dockland with no public access.
  • Some sights are seasonal: Waltham Windmill opens Apr–Sep weekends only and the Lincolnshire Wolds Railway runs Apr–Sep Sundays.
  • Last services on the A1/M18 route are at Doncaster North: nothing for about 40 miles before central Grimsby.
