Costa Teguise is a planned 1970s resort on Lanzarote's east coast, about 7 km from Arrecife and 15 km from the airport. It is low-rise, level and walkable, with four sandy beaches, a César Manrique-designed square and a large package-hotel stock. Most visitors come on a package and stay put; the town works as a base for the island's north and centre by bus, but the big volcanic sights in the south-west are easier with a car or a tour.

Getting around

The resort is spread out but level and walkable; the seafront promenade links the beaches. Local buses run through town to the Hotel Salinas turnaround, with Arrecife about 20 min away. E-scooters are available in town and between Costa Teguise, Arrecife, Playa Honda and Puerto del Carmen. Car rental offices cluster on Av del Jablillo, Av de las Islas Canarias and C las Acacias — hire for 2–3 days rather than a full week if you only want the island's main sights.

Watch out

Safety

A calm, low-crime resort; the real risks are the sea (sharp lava, currents and windsurfing wind), summer heat and unlit cave or cliff walks. Emergency number is 112.
  • Lava cliffs beyond the beaches are sharp-edged; swimming off the rocks is hazardous. Use the sandy beaches.
  • The coast faces east: no sunset views from town, and morning light is best on the jetties.
  • Tahiche Cave is unlit and littered; take a torch and do not go far inside alone.
  • Residencia Real de La Mareta is a private royal residence — view from a distance only.
  • Summer heat and strong windsurfing winds on Playa de las Cucharas; check flags and currents before swimming.
