Bambari

Skip Bambari unless you have a specific reason (iron-ore business, overland route to the east). One night is enough; the town has a market and a cathedral but no tourism infrastructure.

Bambari is the third-largest city in the Central African Republic, a market town on the Ouaka River about 380 km north-east of Bangui. It has a cathedral, a central market and an airport, but no hotels, restaurants or services that a traveller can rely on without local arrangements. Most visitors are aid workers or traders; tourism is effectively zero.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • Central Africa ↗Sort the visa before the flight: none of the seven countries reliably issues tourist visas on arrival to Western passports, and e-visas here are tied to named airports.
  • Central Africa ↗Carry the original yellow fever vaccination certificate in your hand luggage; health desks at every Central African airport ask for it, and a missing card can mean refusal or a jab at the desk.
  • Central Africa ↗Before booking anything in or near the DRC, read the WHO Ebola situation page and your own government's health notice: the 2026 outbreak brought quarantine and boarding rules for people who have been in the DRC.
  • Central African Republic ↗Check your own government travel advice for Central African Republic before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.
  • Central African Republic ↗Entry requires a visa issued by the Central African Republic authorities; no independent tourist route is documented here.

Watch out

Safety

Bambari is in a region with sporadic armed-group activity. Travel only with a local guide or organisation. Avoid night movement. Read your government's travel advisory before planning.
  • No reliable accommodation, restaurants or medical facilities: come self-sufficient.
  • Road from Bangui is unpaved for long stretches and can be impassable in the rainy season.
  • Mobile network coverage is patchy; buy an Orange or Telecel SIM in Bangui.
  • Security situation can change quickly: check your embassy travel advice before any trip.
