Waitomo is a small village in the Waikato hills built around a limestone cave system and its glowworms. Almost everyone comes for the caves: the boat trip under the glowworms, the walking cave at Ruakuri, and the black-water rafting that floats you through the same dark. There is no town here, so you either sleep in the village or drive in from Hamilton, Te Kuiti or Otorohanga. Two tours fill a day; one tour plus a bush walk fills an afternoon.

Getting around

There is no public bus network in the village. Cave operators run shuttles from the village and from Otorohanga, and coach tours arrive from Auckland and Rotorua. With a car you reach the reserve walks, Otorohanga and Te Kuiti on your own schedule; without one you are limited to the village and operator transfers.

Watch out

Safety

Waitomo is a small, safe rural village; the real risks are the dark wet roads at night, cold water on rafting trips and unbooked tours in peak season. Standard New Zealand advice applies: 111 for emergencies, drive on the left.
  • Cave tours are timed and sell out in summer: book the day before at least, earlier in late December and January.
  • Glowworm cave tours are not suitable for very young children or anyone who cannot manage steps and a low boat; check the operator's rules before paying.
  • The glowworm boat trip is silent and no photography inside the cave: phones and cameras are not allowed on the boat.
  • Black-water rafting needs a reasonable level of fitness and gets you wet and cold; it is not a spectator activity.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on the valley roads; download your booking confirmations before you drive in.
  • Distances look short on the map but SH3 and SH37 are two-lane rural roads with trucks and slow traffic; allow more time than the map suggests.
