Peruíbe is a low-rise beach town on São Paulo's south coast, 2 h by bus from the capital, with a 5 km urban strip and a wilder southern edge where the Juréia-Itatins reserve begins. Most visitors come for the beach, the Abarebebê ruins and the Atlantic Forest trails; two nights covers the town, three or more lets you reach the reserve beaches with a guide.

The town is about 8 km end to end; blue EMTU buses run the length by day and taxis or app rides (99, UbizCar) cover short hops. Public buses go no further south than Guaraú, so a rental car is the practical way to reach the Juréia trailheads beyond it.

Watch out

Safety

Peruíbe is a small, generally calm beach town; the real risks are surf and currents, unlicensed Juréia guides and taxis that start the meter late. Standard Brazilian city care applies after dark.
  • Check the taximeter is running before you set off; if not, ask the driver to start it.
  • Beaches inside Itinguçu State Park can only be visited with a licensed environmental monitor.
  • Summer traffic into town is heavy; walk the centre instead of driving.
  • Surf and currents on open beaches: swim near other people, not alone.
