Margate is a north Kent seaside town of about 61,000 people, 1 h 30 min from London St Pancras by fast train. The beach, the Turner Contemporary and the Shell Grotto carry a day; Dreamland and the old town fill a second. It is a work in progress, not a polished resort, and that is part of the point.

Getting around
The centre is walkable: station to beach is about 5 min, beach to Turner Contemporary about 10 min. Stagecoach Loop bus orbits Margate, Cliftonville, Broadstairs and Ramsgate every 10–15 min. Bike hire is by the station. Taxis are short-hop priced; agree the fare first.
