Clitheroe is a small market town in the Ribble Valley, 75 minutes by train from Manchester, with a Norman castle keep on a limestone outcrop and the Forest of Bowland on its doorstep. The town is walkable in an afternoon; the abbey ruins, Pendle Hill and the villages are miles out and buses are thin, so a car changes what you can do.

Getting around

The centre is compact and flat: castle, market, church and pubs are within 10 minutes on foot. Almost everything else — Sawley Abbey, Whalley Abbey, Pendle Hill, Stonyhurst — is 3–8 miles out and served by infrequent buses (roughly hourly to every two hours, Mon–Sat, thinner on Sunday). A car or a taxi is the practical answer; taxis are based in town.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime small town; the real risks are country lanes with no pavement, fast single-track bridges and weather that turns on the fells. Tell someone your route on Pendle Hill.
  • Buses to the villages run hourly at best and stop early; check the last return before you set out.
  • The A59 towards Skipton jams on summer weekends.
  • Edisford Bridge is single-track with no pavement: photograph it from the riverbank.
  • Mobile coverage is patchy: EE and Vodafone are the reliable networks here, Three and O2 weak.
  • Some country pubs close Monday and Tuesday; book ahead for dinner.
