Dumaguete

Base in Dumaguete 2–3 nights for the boulevard and food, then move to Dauin or Apo Island for diving; skip it as a pure beach stay.

Dumaguete is the capital of Negros Oriental and the transport hub of the island's south-east: a university town with a seafront boulevard, a strong café and restaurant strip, and ferries to Siquijor and Mindanao. Most travellers use it as a base for diving at Apo Island and Dauin, dolphin trips at Bais, or as a stop between Cebu and Siquijor. The city itself is compact and walkable, but the good beaches are 20–40 minutes away by road.

Getting around

No general-purpose jeepney routes in town: most trips are by pedicab (motorcycle with sidecar) or tricycle, cheap and easy to flag. A few taxis wait near Robinson's Place and Bethel Guest House. Scooters rent along Perdices St for about ₱300 a day; bring your own helmet. Streets are rarely used as addresses — name a landmark such as Rizal Boulevard, Lee Plaza or Robinson's Place.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Rizal Boulevard / city centre

Walkable to restaurants, cafés and the port; best for a short stay without a scooter.

Dauin coast (20–30 min south)

Dive resorts and beachfront rooms; needs a tricycle or rented scooter for every trip into town.

Valencia (inland, 8 km)

Cooler at 200 m+ elevation; quieter, cheaper rooms, but you rely on jeepneys or a scooter.

Watch out

Safety

Dumaguete is generally safe for tourists and has lower typhoon and earthquake risk than much of the Philippines. Watch for traffic on Perdices St, use a helmet if you ride a scooter, and keep an eye on your bag in crowded markets and on the boulevard at night (check).
  • Wet season Jun–Dec brings heavy rain and typhoon side-effects; the dry window is Jan–May.
  • Scooter and motorcycle riding is common but helmets are not; check your travel insurance covers two-wheelers.
  • Ferries to Siquijor and Cebu fill up in peak season — book a day or two ahead.
  • Sibulan Airport has a short runway ending at the sea; expect a steep approach and takeoff.
  • Earthquake and typhoon risk is lower here than in much of the Philippines, but not zero.
