Thomastown is a small River Nore town 17 km south of Kilkenny, with a train station, a handful of cafés and pubs, and a ring of medieval ruins — Jerpoint Abbey, Grennan Castle, Kilfane Glen and the gardens at Inistioge. It works as a quiet base for the Nore valley rather than a sightseeing hub; most travellers see it in a half-day and sleep in Kilkenny, but one night here buys you the abbey at opening and the gardens in the late afternoon.

The station is 1 km west of the centre and Grennan Castle is a short walk, but Jerpoint Abbey is about 3 km out along a busy road with no footpath, and Inistioge and Woodstock are 8 km away.
