Le Mans is a 55-minute TGV ride from Paris Montparnasse and a former capital of Maine with a walled old town, the Cité Plantagenêt, and one of France's largest cathedrals. Outside race week it is a quiet, walkable city where the sightseeing fits a single day; during the 24 Hours the circuit at the south edge takes over the whole town. Race dates change each year: check the year's dates before booking.

Tram lines T1 and T2 link the station, Place de la République and Place des Jacobins; T1 continues to the circuit (about 30 min, check current service). The centre is walkable: station to old town is 30 min on foot or 5 min by tram. Taxis to the circuit take about 20 min.

Watch out

Safety

Le Mans is a calm, safe city by day and evening; the usual big-town care applies around Place de la République bars late at night, and race week brings heavy traffic and noise near the circuit.
  • Race week in June: hotels sell out and prices jump; book months ahead or avoid the dates.
  • Old-town streets are paved and partly pedestrian; wear flat shoes.
  • Some bars and restaurants in the centre have no posted prices: ask before ordering.
  • The Roman thermal building can only be visited by prior reservation.
