Nazaré is a fishing town turned big-wave capital, split between the beachfront and the clifftop Sítio above it, linked by a funicular. Two nights covers the beach, the sanctuary, the fort and the surf museum; the town is small, walkable and busy in July and August. Winter is quiet and many restaurants close, but the waves are the reason to come then.

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk, but the beach and Sítio are on different levels: use the Ascensor da Nazaré funicular (about €2.50 one way, €4 return, check) or the steep road. Local buses and taxis cover the outskirts; a car helps for day trips along the Oeste coast.

Watch out

Safety

Nazaré is a safe, small town; the real risks are the Atlantic (strong currents and undertow on Praia do Norte) and summer crowds. Keep valuables out of sight on the beach and watch the cliff edges in big-wave weather.
  • Praia do Norte has dangerous currents and undertow: swim only on Praia da Nazaré where lifeguards are on duty in season.
  • Big-wave season (roughly Oct–Mar) brings spray, wind and closed cliff paths; stay behind the barriers at the fort.
  • Many restaurants and guesthouses close in winter; check before booking a low-season trip.
  • Summer parking near the beach fills early; arrive before mid-morning or park uphill.
  • The funicular stops running late at night; check the last ascent if you sleep in Sítio.
