Drøbak is a small wooden-house town on the Oslofjord, 40 minutes by bus from Oslo, best known as the place where the German cruiser Blücher was sunk on 9 April 1940. The centre is walkable in an hour; the fortress island, the aquarium and the Christmas House fill a day. Most travellers come for a half-day or one night, not a long stay.

Getting around

The centre is small and walkable. Buses run north to Oslo and south into Østfold for the wider Follo area. A car helps for beaches and Follo Museum, but expect tolls on local roads. Taxis are expensive.

Safety

Very safe. The real issues are cold water and slippery rocks when swimming, seasonal closures, and expensive taxis; keep to marked paths at the fortress.
  • Local rules stop food sales after midnight, so no late street food.
  • Toll booths are common on roads around Drøbak if you drive.
  • Ferry to Oscarsborg runs seasonally (roughly mid-April to end of September): check the timetable before you plan the day.
  • Many sights and restaurants are seasonal; outside summer, opening hours are short.
