Marquette is a Lake Superior college town of about 21,000 people on Michigan's Upper Peninsula, with Northern Michigan University in the middle of it. The draw is cold water, rock shoreline and forest trails rather than a checklist of sights. A car makes the difference: the good hikes and beaches sit north and south of town, and winter turns the whole area into a ski and snowshoe base. Two nights covers the core; three or more if you add Pictured Rocks or a winter race weekend.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice, especially in winter when side streets stay icy. Marquette has a lakefront bike path from Presque Isle Park south through town, and bike shops rent in summer. Marq-Tran runs a few fixed county bus routes plus door-to-door service (check times).

Watch out

Safety

Marquette is a low-crime college town; the real risks are winter driving, cold lake water and long unlit stretches on the trails after dark.
  • Winter driving: main roads are cleared and salted, side streets can be snow-covered and slippery.
  • Lake Superior stays cold all year; the water is around 10–15 °C even in August.
  • The one-way loop road around Presque Isle closes in winter, and the refreshment shop is seasonal.
  • The lighthouse tour at the Maritime Museum needs an appointment in advance.
