DingleAn Daingean

Give Dingle 2 nights: one day for the town and harbour, one full day for the Slea Head Drive loop. Skip it as a day trip from Killarney.

Dingle is the only real town on the Dingle Peninsula, a fishing harbour of about 1,700 people in a Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking) area, 50 km southwest of Tralee. Pubs with live traditional music, seafood, and the Slea Head Drive's clifftop archaeology are the draw. Two nights is the working minimum; three lets you add Mount Brandon or a Blasket Islands boat.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • Ireland ↗Ireland is in the EU but not in the Schengen area; it sets its own entry rules and a Schengen visa is not valid for Ireland. Check Irish immigration for your passport.
  • Ireland ↗Ireland and the UK form the Common Travel Area, with no routine checks on the land border. Visitors who are not Irish or British must still meet UK rules (including the UK ETA where it applies) to enter Northern Ireland.
  • Ireland ↗Driving is on the left; rural roads are narrow with hedges and few passing places.

Getting around

The town is walkable. For the peninsula you need a car, a bike (rentals in town, including electric) or the Local Link buses, which run a few times a day to Ventry, Ballyferriter, Dunquin and Ballydavid. All roads west loop back through Dingle, so the town is the pinchpoint.

Slea Head Drive loop

go

Door to door: Half to full day

Car or bike west on R559 via Ventry, Dunquin and Ballyferriter

The main reason to come. Start early; the road is narrow and busy in summer.

Blasket Islands

caution

Door to door: Half day

Boat from Dingle, Ventry or Dunquin, weather permitting

Crossings are weather-dependent and seasonal; confirm the day before.

Mount Brandon

go

Door to door: 3–4 h for the 8 km return hike

Drive to the Ballybrack car park near Brandon Creek, then walk

Only on a clear day; the summit view is the point.

Conor Pass and Cloghane

go

Door to door: Half day

R560 over the pass north to Cloghane and Castlegregory

Vehicle size and weight limits apply; the north descent needs full attention.

Tralee

skip

Door to door: About 1 h

Bus Éireann 275 from Dingle, about 1 h via Camp and Annascaul

A transport hub, not a day out; use it to connect onward.

Killarney

overnight

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Local Link 276, about 90 min via Castlemaine, Inch and Annascaul

Three buses a day; too far for a comfortable return day.

Town centre (Main St, Green St, Strand St)

Walk to every pub, restaurant and the harbour; book early for Jul–Aug.

Harbour and Strand St

Seafront pubs and rooms; a few minutes' walk from the centre.

Spa Rd and out-of-town B&Bs

Quieter, 10–15 min walk in; better for drivers with cars.

Ventry and Ballyferriter

Village bases 7–12 km (4.3–7.5 mi) west for a quieter stay; you need a car or the Local Link bus.

Watch out

Safety

Dingle is a low-crime small town; the real risks are narrow roads with tour buses, Atlantic weather that turns fast, and cliff edges on the Slea Head Drive. Tell someone your walking plan on Mount Brandon.
  • Drive the Slea Head loop anticlockwise and pull fully into lay-bys: tour buses and campervans meet on narrow single-track road.
  • Conor Pass bans vehicles over 7.2 m long or 2 tonnes; the north descent is narrow and twisty.
  • Dunbeg Fort is closed off as unsafe after erosion; the visitor centre nearby still opens.
  • Some pubs are cash only (O'Flaherty's, O'Sullivan's Courthouse); carry notes.
  • Book beds and tables for Jul–Aug and the August race weekend well ahead.
