Bonifacio sits on white limestone at the southern tip of Corsica, with the old town on the cliff and the port below it. Everything arrives at the port: ferries from Sardinia, buses from Porto-Vecchio and Ajaccio, and cars. The citadel is small — about 200 m end to end — so the trip is about the cliff walk, the sea caves and the boat to the Lavezzi islands, not about ticking off sights.

Getting around

On foot. The port and the citadel are 10–15 min apart on a steep climb: Ave Charles de Gaulle is the gradual vehicle route with a sidewalk, Montée Rastello the stair route from near Église Saint-Erasme. Le Petit Train runs every 30 min April–October, €5 flat, tickets from the kiosk by the marina tourist office. A car is only worth it for Cap Pertusato and the beaches; park at the harbour and walk up.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a tourist town of about 3,000 people. The real risks are the steep, uneven climb to the citadel, unfenced cliff edges on the headland, and summer heat on the exposed walks.
  • The climb to the citadel is steep and the stairs are uneven; allow 15 min with bags.
  • Upper-town parking is limited and congested in summer — park at the port.
  • The Chemin de Ronde (wall-top patrol path) is closed for safety.
  • The Escalier du Roi d'Aragon is timed-entry in season: book online and arrive 30 min before the last slot.
  • Ferry and bus timetables thin out sharply outside July–August; check the day before.
  • The cliffs are unfenced in places and the mistral-like wind is strong on the headland.
