Apopka
Skip Apopka as a base. Go only if you want Kelly Park or Wekiwa Springs on a weekday morning; otherwise sleep in Orlando or Winter Garden.
Apopka is a small Orange County city northwest of Orlando, known for greenhouse nurseries and two spring parks on its edge. The historic downtown is a 20-minute walk of National Register buildings. Almost everyone visits as a half-day from Orlando, not as a place to sleep.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
A car is the practical choice: the springs, downtown and the highway strip are 5–15 min apart and sidewalks are patchy. Lynx buses run from Orlando to the Apopka Superstop on a limited schedule — check current times before relying on it. Rideshare works but waits can be long at the parks.

Day-trips
Door to door: 35–50 min by car

Use Orlando as your base and Apopka as the outing, not the reverse.
Door to door: 25–35 min
Car via FL-429 or SR-50
Historic downtown, bike trail and better evening food than Apopka.
Door to door: 40–55 min
Car via FL-429 and I-4
Riverfront downtown and the auto train station; pair with SFB flights.
Door to door: 30–40 min
Car via I-4
Museums, park-chain boat tour and a walkable main street.
Door to door: 45–60 min
Car via FL-429 and I-4
Doable but a long day; stay nearer the parks if this is the point of the trip.
Door to door: 40–55 min
Car via I-4
Same as Disney: fine as a day, poor as a base.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Apopka City Center / E Main St
Two chain hotels, walkable to downtown restaurants; best if you need to be in Apopka itself.
Semoran Blvd (FL-436) corridor
Highway motels and diners; car needed for everything.
Altamonte Springs or Winter Garden
Better food and more rooms, 20–30 min away; use these unless you have a reason to be in Apopka.

Watch out
Safety
- Kelly Park fills up and closes entry once the lot is full — arrive at opening, especially on weekends and holidays.
- Afternoon thunderstorms Jun–Sep; springs can close after heavy rain.
- Toll roads (FL-429, FL-451, FL-408) need a transponder or pay-by-plate; rental add-ons cost extra.
- Wildlife: alligators and snakes are real in the spring runs and state park — stay in marked swimming areas.
