Ciutadella is Menorca's former capital, on the west coast, with a compact Gothic old town, a working harbour and the island's biggest festival. Hotels cluster in the centre and in resort coves 3–5 km out. Two nights covers the town; add nights if you want coves and boat time.

Getting around

The old town is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. Local Torres buses run from Plaça des Pins to the resort coves; TMSA buses 1 and 14 link to Maó every 30 min from the bus station on Plaça de la Pau. A car helps for beaches and the ME-1; park at Plaça de la Pau or Plaça des Born.

Watch out

Safety

Ciutadella is a low-crime town; the real risks are summer heat, rocky coves, and swimming where there is no lifeguard. Keep an eye on bags in Sant Joan crowds.
  • July and August: old-town streets and the port fill up; book beds and ferry seats weeks ahead.
  • Sant Joan week (around 23–24 June) brings large crowds and late noise; some businesses change hours.
  • Foot-passenger ferry fares from Alcúdia and Barcelona are high and there is no competing operator on these routes: compare with flying into MAH.
  • Many coves near town are rocky with little shade; carry water and shoes for stones.
  • Some restaurants around the cathedral are seasonal and close outside May–October: check before you walk over.
