Go for one night or a day trip from San Diego: 1 h 15 min by car, apple pie on Main Street, gold-mine tours. Skip if you have no car.
Julian is a small mountain town in San Diego County's backcountry, about an hour inland from the coast. It is known for apple pie, a 19th-century gold rush history and four-season weather that is rare in Southern California: fall colour, winter snow, spring wildflowers and hot summers. Most visitors come for a day or one night, using it as a base for Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and the surrounding Cleveland National Forest.

Getting around
A car is effectively required. Main Street is walkable once you park, but wineries, state parks, the Julian Train and apple orchards are spread along highways 78, 79 and S1. MTS Route 891 runs once weekly on early Friday afternoon from El Cajon (about 2 h) and back from Borrego Springs on Friday morning; it is too limited for a normal trip. Fill up in Santa Ysabel or Ramona: mountain stations are sparse and pricier.
