Villazón (Bolivia) and La Quiaca (Argentina) face each other across a single bridge at 3,400 m+, and most travellers only cross them. One night buys you cheap market food, a working ATM on the Bolivian side, and a buffer against the slow Argentina-to-Bolivia queue. There is almost nothing to sightsee: this is a transit town with a real border economy, and it is worth a few hours or a night, not a base.

Getting around

Both towns are walkable; the bridge is the only crossing. Taxis are cheap and line up near the Villazón bus station and around La Quiaca. The Villazón train station is about a 30-minute uphill walk from the border, or a short taxi ride. Villazón's new bus terminal is about 40 min on foot from the border, 10 min by taxi; the old terminal is 10 min on foot.

Watch out

Safety

Low street-crime risk; the real hazards are altitude, the exposed border queue and unpriced restaurant bills. Use both passport controls and agree prices before ordering.
  • Go through both countries' passport control when you cross; a missing entry stamp causes trouble on exit.
  • Argentina to Bolivia can take minutes or several hours, with no shade in the queue: start early.
  • Altitude is over 3,400 m; coming straight from Buenos Aires or other low ground, altitude sickness is a real risk.
  • Some restaurants do not post prices and charge more if you do not agree the total first.
  • There is a one-hour time difference: Villazón is an hour behind La Quiaca.
  • Villazón has no Wi-Fi for your own device; internet cafés charge about Bs 3 an hour.
