Armutlu is a small resort on the south coast of the Armutlu Peninsula, looking over the Gulf of Gemlik, about two hours by ferry from Istanbul. It is known for hot springs, olive groves and a low-key summer beach scene rather than for sights. The town splits into three parts: İskele by the ferry pier, the old village (Merkez/Köy) 1 km uphill, and the İhlas resort 5 km west. Most travellers use it as a one- or two-night break on the way to Bursa or Yalova, and İDO ferries do not call here every day, so check the timetable before you build a plan around it.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Minibuses (some run by the Belediye, some private) link the harbour, the village and İhlas, and occasionally run up to the spring source; they are infrequent, so ask your hotel for times. Roads inside town are paved but narrow and often unmarked, and the İhlas–village road has no sidewalk. A car makes the peninsula villages and Gemlik easy; without one you are limited to the town and the beach.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Gemlik

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Minibus up the peninsula, about 30 min

Transport hub and olive-and-fruit market town; the hillside villages of Fıstıklı and Kapaklı are on the way.

Mudanya

caution

Door to door: 1.5–2.5 h

Ferry when it calls, otherwise minibus to Gemlik then bus

Ferry port with Ottoman buildings; Tirilye has a Byzantine church. Only worth it if the ferry timing works.

Door to door: About 1.25 h

Armodies Turizm bus direct, about 1 h

Five buses a day; the first Ottoman capital and the place for İskender kebap.

Yalovacaution

Door to door: About 3 h

Bus through the north peninsula villages, about 3 h

Slow but scenic; the provincial capital has similar hot springs and a ferry port.

Iznikovernight

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

Car via Gemlik and the O-5, or bus with a change

Lakeside walls and tile workshops; too far for a comfortable return day.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

İskele (harbour)

Ferry pier, Migros supermarket and the thermal hotels; best if you arrive by boat and leave by boat.

Merkez / Köy (old village)

1 km uphill from the harbour; cafés, shops and the everyday town, walkable to the beach.

İhlas (Tatil Köyü)

Resort village 5 km west with its own beach and year-round hotel; car or minibus needed for everything else.

Thermal area (Kaplıca Cd)

Spa hotels around the spring source north of town; quiet, and you need a car or taxi.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet resort town and generally safe; the real risks are the sea (no lifeguards on most stretches), unlit roads with no sidewalk, and summer heat. Use 112 for everything.
  • Most İDO ferries from Istanbul go direct to Mudanya or Güzelyalı and do not call at Armutlu: check the sailing list for your date before booking.
  • Buses from Istanbul and Ankara usually mean a change at Gemlik, where five buses a day run up the peninsula.
  • The Armutlu 'bus station' is a scrum of minibuses in the town centre, not a terminal with signs.
  • The İhlas–village road is rough and has no sidewalk; walk it with care after dark.
  • Mobile data is reliable on Turkcell; other carriers are patchy here.
  • Some spa hotels here have erratic cleanliness for the price: read recent reviews before you commit.
