Salen is a small village on the east coast of Mull, about 10 miles from both Craignure and Tobermory. It is a junction, a harbour and a handful of beds, not a sight in itself. Its value is position: Ulva Ferry, Ben More, Aros Castle and the Macquarie Mausoleum are all short drives away, and the bus to Craignure connects to the Oban ferry.

Getting around

You need a car or bike. Bus 95/495 runs about five times daily to Craignure (30 min) and on to Tobermory, with no Sunday service Nov–Mar. The Ulva Ferry community minibus runs twice F–Su along the west coast. The A848 northwest is single track and twisty.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime. The real risks are single-track roads, midges May–Sep, weather that turns on Ben More, and no phone signal in places: tell someone your plan.
  • Mobile signal is patchy (EE and Three only); no 5G on Mull.
  • The A848 towards Tobermory is single track: use passing places.
  • MacKinnon's Cave is reachable only within about two hours either side of low tide, and needs a torch.
  • Deer-stalking Aug–Oct M–Sa: ask before climbing Ben More.
  • Many hotels, campsites and cafés close Nov–Mar.
